SHILLONG, May 8: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Friday said preparations for Meghalaya’s hosting of the National Games are progressing smoothly, adding that the State Government has left no stone unturned to ensure the successful conduct of the event.
Speaking to reporters, Shylla said he does not anticipate any major hurdles, pointing out that Meghalaya has built up considerable experience over the past three years through the successful organisation of the Meghalaya Games, the North East Olympic Games and the South Asian Games.
He said the required infrastructure is steadily taking shape and the committees constituted for the Games have already been formed, with preparations now entering the final stages.
“The preparations are moving well. Both the State and Central governments are closely monitoring the progress. The Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has visited the State and representatives of the Indian Olympic Association have also reviewed the preparations.
From their side too, the response has been positive,” the minister said. As part of the review process, Kunal K visited Meghalaya on May 5 and 6 to assess the State’s readiness for the 39th National Games.
During the two-day visit, he inspected key venues including the J.N. Sports Complex, the Integrated Hospitality and Sports Complex and the Mawkhanu Football Stadium.
Officials said the inspection was a significant step towards evaluating the pace of infrastructure development and ensuring that facilities are ready to host athletes, officials and visitors from across the country.
The visit is being seen as an important milestone in Meghalaya’s preparations for what is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events in the State’s history.
Officials added that the review reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a successful National Games while ensuring that infrastructure and event management meet national standards. With infrastructure works gathering pace and regular inspections being carried out by both State and national authorities, Meghalaya’s preparations for the 39th National Games are steadily moving towards completion.
The event is expected not only to provide a major boost to the sporting ecosystem in the State but also to showcase Meghalaya’s growing capability to host large-scale multi-disciplinary events.
Officials believe the Games will leave behind a lasting sporting legacy by improving infrastructure, creating opportunities for local athletes and volunteers and placing Meghalaya firmly on the national sporting map.
As anticipation builds, the successful hosting of the National Games is being seen as a landmark moment for the State and a significant step forward in its sporting journey.Officials are optimistic that the National Games will not only celebrate sporting excellence but also open a new chapter for Meghalaya by inspiring young athletes.
