SHILLONG, May 8: The state government is waiting for the office of the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to relocate from Khyndai Lad to the New Shillong Township before starting the beautification of the Police Bazar stretch.
Last year, hundreds of hawkers were moved from the area to the MUDA parking lot to clear the way for the project, which aims to upgrade one of Shillong’s most iconic landmarks for residents and tourists.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar, stated that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared.
However, he explained that the plot of land currently occupied by the Speaker’s office must be incorporated into the final design. “We are waiting for the shifting of the office of the Speaker to New Shillong Township, after which we will integrate that space into the project,” Dhar said.
The stretch is currently a designated pedestrian zone, with vehicle access permitted only for local residents during specific hours of the day.
