SHILLONG, May 9: Following the rescue of a newborn buried alive in Ri-Bhoi recently, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has called for increased public awareness and the empowerment of women to prevent such tragedies.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, SCPCR Chairperson Agatha Sangma said that the commission may conduct a study into the abandonment of newborns if such cases reach an alarming level in the state.
Referring to the Ri-Bhoi incident, Sangma noted that the mother appeared to have acted out of panic.
She then stressed the need for education and support systems for women, even while observing that this was a rare occurrence in Meghalaya.
It may be mentioned that the incident occurred on April 27 in Mawhati, where schoolchildren rescued an infant from loose mud. The baby was subsequently rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for medical care.
A case has been registered at the Nongpoh Women Police Station, and an investigation is currently under way.
