SHILLONG, May 9: The Office of the Commissioner of Transport, Meghalaya, has issued a public notice directing all vehicle owners to strictly comply with rules regarding High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) and mandatory documentation.
The notice, which was issued recently, follows observations by the department that numerous vehicles are plying without proper number plates or HSRP. This, according to the department, is in violation of Supreme Court directives and Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The department specifically noted that heavy goods vehicles operating in border areas and the outskirts of the state are frequently found without HSRPs or valid statutory documents.
In this regard, vehicle owners have been asked to ensure that HSRPs are affixed to both the front and rear of their vehicles. Additionally, the department made it mandatory for all vehicles to possess valid fitness certificates, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, registration certificates, insurance papers, road tax documents and valid driving licenses. The Transport department warned that strict enforcement drives will be conducted across the state, with a focus on border areas and vulnerable routes.
Violators face stringent legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act, which may include the seizure and detention of vehicles, heavy penalties and imprisonment.
