SHILLONG, May 9: The Meghalaya Animal Husbandry Department, in collaboration with Mercy for Animals India, organised a technical session on feeding practices and animal welfare at the Vocational Training Centre in Upper Shillong.
According to a statement here, the programme aimed to improve pig welfare by combining scientific precision with ethical care.
The session was attended by Dr. V. Hynniewta, Registrar of the Meghalaya State Veterinary Council; Dr. LM Umlong, Deputy Director (AHP); Dr. R. Thomas, Principal Scientist at ICAR-NRCP, Guwahati; and Dr. D.T. Sun, Assistant Director (Piggery Development).
The training focused on equipping veterinarians with practical skills in scientific feeding based on management practices recommended by the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig.
Key topics included the promotion of balanced and hygienic feeding systems and the importance of biosecurity measures to prevent diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
A major point of discussion was the prohibition of feeding untreated and unregulated food waste (swill) to livestock.
During the programme, experts noted that such practices are essential to ensure the health and safety of the animals.
