SHILLONG, May 9: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Sohiong Circle on Friday called for an inquiry into the disappearance of road delineators along the Shillong-Nongstoin Road, describing the matter as one of serious concern for public safety.
Addressing a press conference, HYC Sohiong Circle president Purningstar Shabong said the organisation has submitted a representation to the PWD National Highway Division, Shillong, seeking clarification on the missing road safety markers.
He said the organisation was surprised to find that a large number of delineators installed along the highway had disappeared within a short period of their installation.
According to him, the issue has raised concerns among the public, with questions being asked as to whether the delineators were removed by the department or whether the disappearance reflected deficiencies in the execution of the work.
He said information made available to the organisation revealed that out of 842 delineators installed along the stretch, as many as 662 are presently missing.
Shabong said the department informed the organisation that the missing delineators were attributed to road accidents, theft, overspeeding and damage caused by miscreants.
Describing the development as alarming, he said it was difficult to understand how such a large number of road safety installations could disappear or be damaged so soon after being put in place. He further alleged that the authorities concerned had not taken adequate steps to address the matter despite its implications for the safety of commuters.
The HYC Sohiong Circle president said delineators are essential road safety devices that guide motorists, particularly during night-time travel and adverse weather conditions, and their disappearance could heighten the risk of accidents.
