SHILLONG, May 10: With the second phase of the interstate boundary talks between Meghalaya and Assam yet to resume, the State BJP has announced it will approach the Centre regarding the “humanitarian crisis” faced by residents in the Block I border area.
State BJP General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna, who recently visited Dienler village in Block I, said the condition of residents is “miserable.” Following a meeting with the Acting Doloi and 30 village headmen (Waheh Chnongs), Pohshna claimed that many families living on ancestral land for generations are deprived of basic government documents and welfare services.
He reported that several residents lack birth certificates, Aadhaar cards, EPIC documents, and Ayushman Bharat cards.
He further alleged that the villages are significantly underserved, lacking proper schools and healthcare facilities.
“The people are in a state of humanitarian crisis,” Pohshna said, noting that many struggle to access central schemes. He added that villagers are often forced to travel to Assam for administrative procedures like obtaining birth certificates, a process he described as both expensive and time-consuming.
The BJP leader stated that the party would bring these grievances to its central leadership and the concerned authorities.
The second phase of the border talks between Meghalaya and Assam has been stalled for several years and is expected to regain momentum after the Assam Assembly elections.
