SHILLONG, May 10: The Public Works Department (Buildings) on Sunday clarified that a viral video circulating on social media showing alleged damage to the roof of the new Assembly building is misleading and does not reflect any structural defect.
In an official statement, the Chief Engineer of PWD (Buildings) explained that the portion seen in the video involves the replacement of Pre-Painted Galvalume (PPGL) sheets. These sheets are installed over the main reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slab for aesthetic purposes and are not part of the building’s core structural framework.
The department stated that an inspection was conducted on April 22 by PWD officials and project management consultants ahead of the formal project handover. During this visit, the contractor, Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd, was directed to undertake corrective measures, including removing stickers from windows and replacing stained or uneven roof sheets.
Work on replacing the affected sheets began three days ago and is currently in progress. The department appealed to the public to refrain from circulating misleading videos or sensational claims without verifying the facts.
The contractor also denied reports of a roof collapse, maintaining that the work is part of routine finishing activities. Sumit Roy of Design Associates, the firm supervising the project, confirmed that a section of the roof was being replaced due to improper cleaning marks and stickers. He added that the project has entered its final stage, with only cleaning and minor finishing works remaining.
