SHILLONG, May 12: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday condemned the alleged assault of a woman from the Northeast in Delhi and called for stringent legal action against the accused.
Delhi Police said that all four suspects involved in the incident have been detained.
The women, one from Assam and another from Bihar, had stepped out for tea early morning after night shifts were subjected to aggressive catcalling and derogatory remarks. When they protested and recorded the harassment, the altercation turned violent with a larger group of men surrounding them, slapped them, tore their clothes, and attacked one of the women with a bamboo stick.
According to the two victims, over 150 onlookers and passersby watched and recorded videos while laughing, but no one stepped forward to help.
“Such repeated acts of violence and discrimination cannot be dismissed as isolated incidents and must be met with the strictest punishment under the law,” Sangma said in a post on X.
“Racial discrimination and violence against people from the Northeast have no place in our society and must be dealt with firmly,” he added.
