SHILLONG, May 12: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the alleged black marketing of LPG cylinders amid the ongoing cooking gas shortage in the state.
In a statement, MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla said it was surprising that despite the severe LPG crisis affecting ordinary consumers, there appeared to be no shortage of cylinders in the black market.
She alleged that illegal sellers were openly charging exorbitant prices ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per cylinder, making it impossible for common people to afford cooking gas.
“While ordinary citizens are struggling to obtain LPG cylinders through proper channels, illegal sellers are taking advantage of the situation and exploiting the public,” she said.
The MPMC demanded immediate intervention from the authorities concerned to assess the crisis and launch strict action against those involved in the illegal sale of LPG cylinders.
Shylla also criticised what it described as the government’s silence and inaction on the issue, stating that the burden of the crisis was falling heavily on poor families and women across the state.
The MPMC president urged the authorities to ensure proper supply and distribution of LPG cylinders and to take firm measures to curb black marketing activities.
