SHILLONG, May 12: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday defended the government’s decision to assign teachers for Census duties, stating that the practice is followed across the country and is not unique to Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters here, Rymbui said both the Census and election processes are important national exercises and require the involvement of government employees, including teachers.
He said the government cannot entrust such responsibilities to just anyone, adding that teachers and other government staff have traditionally been deployed for these duties.
The minister further informed that discussions on the matter have already taken place and the government would decide on the next course of action at an appropriate time.
