SHILLONG, May 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday flagged off a new fleet of 95 police vehicles at the Police Officers’ Mess, Golf Links, aimed at enhancing the mobility and operational efficiency of the Meghalaya Police.
The procurement, costing approximately Rs 30 crore, includes 79 vehicles acquired through the Central Assistance to State Police Scheme. The fleet comprises 20 Maruti Jimnys, 19 heavy Tata troop carriers, five Mahindra mini trucks, 37 buses of various seating capacities, and eight Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated that maintaining law and order remains a primary responsibility of the government. He highlighted ongoing modernisation efforts, including the implementation of the Police Reserve Fund and the renovation of aging infrastructure. Sangma also noted that greater authority has been delegated to Superintendents of Police and unit commanders to expedite administrative works.
The Chief Minister further cited the recruitment of over 3,000 personnel into long-vacant posts as a major step in strengthening the force’s manpower. He also commended the police for their professionalism and restraint during recent tensions in Lapangap, West Jaintia Hills, while the government continues boundary dialogues with Assam.
Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang and senior government officials were present at the ceremony. Underlining the government’s commitment to border security and rural policing, Sangma added that police stations and outposts across remote and sensitive areas are being steadily upgraded.
