SHILLONG, May 17: Thousands gathered in Sohra on Saturday to witness the traditional cremation of the preserved remains of Iartimai Syiem, the former Syiemsad of Hima Sohra, nearly 32 years after her passing.
The ceremony was organised by the Syiem family, led by the current Syiemsad, Costlymai Syiem, and former Deputy Syiem Marremdor Syiem, in collaboration with the Myntris (deputies) of the Hima. The former Syiemsad died on November 10, 1994, and her remains had since been preserved in accordance with Khasi customs.
The day began with traditional religious rites and the exhumation process at Lum Tieh-U-Jir. Simultaneously, a gathering was held at the residence of the current Syiemsad in Nongrim Sohra, attended by relatives, community elders, and well-wishers.
Speakers at the gathering, including family members and traditional heads such as the Secretary of Raid Mawshuit and former Syiem of Hima Mylliem Laborious Syiem, highlighted the cultural significance of the event.
Following the meeting, the remains were placed inside a Lyngkhashon and carried in a ceremonial procession to the cremation site. Throughout the march, elders of Raid Mawshuit blew traditional horns and performed “Ai Khaw” chants to invoke blessings.
At Lum Tieh-U-Jir, the children and grandchildren of the late Iartimai Syiem retrieved the remains for cremation on a traditional pyre. Speaking after the ceremony, Marremdor Syiem expressed gratitude to the community for supporting the observance of these longstanding Khasi traditions.
