SHILLONG, May 18: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is launching a collaboration to fuse the North East’s Eri silk with Rajasthan’s Kota Doria fabric. This initiative aims to create a premium textile for domestic and international markets, blending two of India’s most distinct handloom traditions.
Secretary of the Ministry of DoNER, Sanjay Jaju, visited the Kaithoon Common Facility Centre in Kota on May 17 to assess traditional weaving techniques. He was accompanied by Kota District Collector Piyush Samaria and NEHHDC Managing Director Mara Kocho. The delegation met with local artisans and designers to discuss integrating Eri silk—often called “peace silk” for its eco-friendly production—with the lightweight, transparent weave of Kota Doria.
Officials believe the fusion will produce a high-value fabric that combines luxury with durability. The project is expected to create new livelihood opportunities for weavers in both Rajasthan and the Northeastern states.
