Resubelpara, May 18: Meghalaya took another step towards strengthening grassroots sports infrastructure with the foundation stone for a new mini stadium at Damas in North Garo Hills being laid on Monday.
The programme, held at Sacred Heart Secondary School, Damas, was attended by public representatives, officials, athletes and local residents.Speaking at the event, officials highlighted the State Government’s ongoing push to improve sporting infrastructure across Meghalaya, with more than 240 projects related to different sporting disciplines currently under development in various districts and blocks. The proposed stadium at Damas is expected to provide local athletes and young footballers with better facilities to train and compete, particularly in rural areas where sporting infrastructure has often remained limited. It was also informed that several sports-related development projects are being implemented in North Garo Hills, including the revamp of the mini stadium at Resubelpara.
The importance of balancing sports and education for the overall development of young people was emphasised during the programme, while parents were encouraged to support children in pursuing sporting activities alongside academics.
Athletes who performed well in different sporting events were felicitated during the occasion.Among those present were Conrad K Sangma, Timothy D Shira, Marthon Sangma and district officials.
For many aspiring footballers and sportspersons in rural areas, access to proper infrastructure has long been a challenge.
The upcoming facility, along with other ongoing projects in the district, is hoped to bridge that gap and encourage greater participation in sports at the grassroots level.
