SHILLONG, May 19: The family of a man whose body was recovered from a tea stall at Permadan village in Eastern West Khasi Hills on Tuesday morning has alleged foul play, stating they do not believe the death was a suicide.
The deceased has been identified as Tailan Lyngdoh Nonglait. His body was discovered around 6 am by a cousin inside a tea stall belonging to his niece. Police and the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) inspected the site before the body was sent to Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital, Mairang, for a post-mortem examination.
Family members told reporters that Nonglait had visited the stall on Monday night to retrieve his mobile phone. When he was found the next morning, his mouth was tied with a cloth, and his neck and legs were bound with rope. They further claimed there were clear signs of a struggle, as tables and benches inside the stall were found scattered and damaged.
Unable to accept the theory of suicide, the family has lodged an FIR. Eastern West Khasi Hills police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine if the death was a homicide.
