SHILLONG, May 19: Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Tuesday said the state is expected to host Union Minister of State for Sports along with senior sports officials later this month for a regional “Chintan Shivir” and the signing of a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the National Games.
Shylla said he had so far received only verbal confirmation regarding the proposed visit, which is expected to take place from May 28 to 30 in Shillong.
According to the minister, the meeting on May 28 and 29 will involve the “My Bharat” teams from eastern and northeastern states, including West Bengal and Odisha. He said the gathering would serve as an eastern zone-level coordination meeting.
The minister also said a delegation from Meghalaya had recently travelled to Delhi to hold discussions with the Union Sports Ministry regarding renewal of the agreement linked to the National Games. He said the original agreement had been signed around seven to eight years ago and required certain corrections and revisions.
Shylla said the Union Sports Minister had suggested that the renewed agreement be signed in Shillong itself, and the signing is now expected to take place on May 30.
He clarified that the revised MoU was not an entirely new agreement but involved corrections suggested by bodies including the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). However, he said he was yet to receive the full details as the state team that attended the Delhi meeting was still preparing the final documents.
