LONDON, May 19: Tushar Kumar, a 23-year-old councillor originally from Haryana, has made history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom after being appointed mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in London. His appointment was formalised during a Mayor-Making Ceremony at Fairway Hall on May 13, attended by councillors, civic leaders, community members, and his family.
Kumar, who was first elected as a councillor at just 20 while studying political science at King’s College London, said the achievement felt “surreal” and reflected his journey in public service. In a social media post, he expressed pride in serving the town he loves and highlighted his goal of encouraging more young people to participate in local politics and community work.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked outgoing mayor Councillor Dan Ozarow for his guidance and congratulated new deputy mayor Councillor Linda Smith. He also acknowledged strong support from his family and friends.
Kumar said he aims to remain a “present mayor” actively engaged with residents and local organisations throughout his tenure. (IANS)
