TURA, May 24: Heavy rains and strong winds on Saturday night caused widespread damage and power outages across West Garo Hills, with several trees falling on critical power lines and residential structures.
At Ringre, a large tree collapsed onto the 33 KV Tura-I power line within the premises of Tura Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School.
MePDCL personnel, supported by the SDRF, Forest department and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), conducted emergency clearance operations past midnight to restore the line. The inclement weather continued into Sunday morning, leading to similar incidents in various localities. The 33 KV line feeding the Hawakhana Substation was also damaged, resulting in a total blackout in Tura and adjoining areas.
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal is currently monitoring the restoration work in coordination with the MePDCL and the DDMA.
