AMPATI, May 27: The South West Garo Hills District Administration conducted a re-enrollment drive at Nayapara, Mahendraganj, on Tuesday to bring out-of-school children back into the education system.
District authorities have identified 188 school dropouts so far, with efforts ongoing to track more and facilitate their return to classrooms.
Deputy Commissioner Kumari Annendya Raajsree interacted with parents and students during the programme, encouraging children to resume their studies. She highlighted that education is vital for making informed life decisions and protecting oneself from fraud.
Zikzak BDO Torali K Marak and SDSEO Emphul Ch. Marak, who jointly conceptualised the initiative, emphasised the importance of counseling both parents and children.
The programme also addressed broader social issues, with Assistant Labour Commissioner Leni Bethlen K Sangma explaining the legal implications of child labour. District Child Protection Officer Tanweera M Sangma further sensitized the gathering on the legal consequences and risks of teenage pregnancy.
Following the counseling session, eight students—five girls and three boys—agreed to return to school. The SDSEO assured full support from the department to help these students reintegrate into mainstream education.
