Govt notifies three street vending zones in Shillong

SHILLONG, May 30: The Meghalaya Urban Affairs department has officially notified three designated street vending locations in Shillong under the provisions of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.
The decision follows the approval of the Town Vending Committee (TVC) and consultations with various street vendors’ associations.
The three approved vending zones are the ground floor of the Iew Mawlong Parking Lot, the area in front of the State Guest House at Ward’s Lake and a plot belonging to the Urban Affairs department adjacent to the Majestic Hotel in Polo.
According to the department, the move is in compliance with directives from the High Court of Meghalaya, which had instructed the state government to demarcate specific areas where street vending can be permitted.
The government stated that these designated zones aim to regulate street commerce while protecting the livelihoods of vendors and ensuring more orderly urban management across the city.
