Budapest, May 30: Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after overcoming Arsenal 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout following a gripping 1-1 draw in the final at the Puskas Arena on Saturday.
The French champions became the first club since Real Madrid in 2018 to retain Europe’s most prestigious club trophy, prevailing after 120 minutes of fiercely contested football and a nerve-racking shootout that ended in heartbreak for Arsenal.
The decisive moment came when Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes stepped up to take his side’s final penalty. Needing to score to keep the Gunners alive, the Brazilian blasted his effort high over the crossbar, sparking jubilant celebrations among PSG players and supporters.
The final had begun in dream fashion for Arsenal, who struck just six minutes into the contest. A defensive lapse involving PSG captain Marquinhos allowed Kai Havertz to seize possession, and the German forward calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to hand the Premier League side an early advantage.
The goal injected confidence into Mikel Arteta’s men, who looked sharp and organised during the opening exchanges. However, PSG gradually wrestled control of possession and began to dictate the tempo of the match. The reigning champions created a number of promising opportunities but found Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in excellent form. The Spanish shot-stopper produced several important saves to preserve his team’s slender lead as PSG continued to probe for an equaliser.Arsenal were also handed a golden opportunity to extend their advantage when they were awarded a penalty during the first half. However, Eberechi Eze failed to capitalise, missing from the spot and allowing PSG to remain firmly in the contest.
The missed penalty proved costly as PSG finally found a breakthrough midway through the second half.
In the 65th minute, Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera was penalised for bringing down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Ousmane Dembele stepped forward and calmly dispatched the resulting spot-kick beyond Raya to level the scores at 1-1.The goal shifted momentum firmly in PSG’s favour, but despite sustained pressure, neither side could find a winner during regulation time.As fatigue began to take its toll, the final moved into extra time — the first Champions League final to require an additional 30 minutes in a decade.
Both teams continued to search for a decisive goal, with chances appearing at either end. PSG looked the more adventurous side in possession, while Arsenal relied on quick transitions and counter-attacks to threaten.Raya once again came to Arsenal’s rescue during the latter stages, notably saving a penalty from Nuno Mendes to ensure the contest remained level and force a dramatic shootout.
With the title hanging in the balance, PSG displayed remarkable composure from 12 yards. The French side converted four of their penalties, while Arsenal’s hopes were dented by misses from Eze and, ultimately, Gabriel. (Agencies)
