SHILLONG, May 30: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh has renewed his call for regional political parties in Meghalaya to come together, saying unity among regional forces remains essential to fulfil the aspirations of the state’s indigenous people.
Responding to questions on the prospects of regional parties joining hands, Lyngdoh said attempts at unification were not new and had been pursued by several leaders and regional organisations in the past, though they had not achieved lasting success.
Referring to earlier efforts involving regional formations such as the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), All Party Hill Leaders’ Conference (APHLC) and other groups, he said the objective of bringing regional parties under a common platform has existed for decades.
“We will not give up. We will continue with that spirit of regionalism and the spirit of giving first priority to the indigenous people,” Lyngdoh said.
He appealed to all regional parties in the state to come together and work on a common platform, stating that a united regional front could better represent the interests and aspirations of indigenous communities.
At the same time, Lyngdoh clarified that advocating for indigenous rights did not mean excluding other communities.
He said regional parties believe in protecting the interests of local people while maintaining respect for all sections of society living in the state.
