Meghalaya govt accords heritage building status to Lok Bhavan

SHILLONG, May 31: The Meghalaya government has officially declared Lok Bhavan as a heritage building under the provisions of the Meghalaya Heritage Act, 2012.
According to a notification issued by the Urban Affairs Department, the decision was taken in recognition of the Lok Bhavan’s historical, architectural, and cultural significance.
The building, located in the heart of Shillong, has long served as a landmark of public life and governance in the state.
The notification states that preserving Lok Bhavan is essential to safeguarding Meghalaya’s cultural identity and architectural heritage.
Following the declaration, the building will be governed by the provisions of the Meghalaya Heritage Regulations, 2013.
The order came into effect immediately and aims to ensure the protection and conservation of one of Shillong’s most prominent heritage structures.
