SHILLONG, June 1: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) on Sunday briefed National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar on concerns regarding violence against women and the need to strengthen institutional mechanisms in the state.
The meeting, held at the State Convention Centre during Rahatkar’s two-day visit, included MSCW Chairperson Iamonlang Syiem and newly appointed commission members. The MSCW highlighted various challenges faced by women in Meghalaya, calling for stronger coordination and support systems to ensure effective redressal of complaints and enhanced protection.
Discussions also focused on NCW funding, the mandates of both bodies, and the implementation of women-centric welfare initiatives. Rahatkar briefed the new members on their responsibilities, stressing the importance of proactive intervention, awareness generation, and timely action. The chairperson also reviewed the State Commission’s functioning and addressed broader concerns such as stalking and gender-based violence.
On Sunday, Rahatkar visited Krang Suri in West Jaintia Hills. On Monday, she inaugurated the Shubham Reusable Sanitary Pad production unit at Paltan Bazar, Shillong, followed by a visit to a similar unit at Khatarshnong, Laitkroh. She also attended an awareness programme at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Sohra before departing for New Delhi via Guwahati.
