SHILLONG, June 3: State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak on Wednesday accused the Meghalaya government of failing to honour its obligations under the tripartite agreement regarding salary payments for Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) employees.
In a statement, Marak claimed the persistent delays violate the terms signed between the Government of India, the Meghalaya government, and the ANVC and ANVC-B groups. He argued that the state’s failure to effectively use the escrow account mechanism for disbursements has led to a mounting salary backlog, causing significant hardship for staff.
The BJP leader further noted that the government has failed to deliver on assurances made during the GHADC employees’ agitation in 2025. At that time, a sub-committee reportedly promised that salaries would be credited on the first day of every month—a commitment Marak says has not been kept.
Marak emphasised that the state government is responsible for ensuring uninterrupted payments as envisaged in the tripartite pact signed on September 24, 2014, in the presence of then-Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Pointing to the ongoing uncertainty faced by council staff, the BJP leader urged the government to uphold its commitments and ensure the timely release of all pending and future salaries.
