‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ launched to promote sustainable farming

SHILLONG/TURA, June 3: The month-long ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ campaign was launched in parts of Meghalaya to promote sustainable farming practices, soil conservation and improved crop management through awareness programmes, farmer interactions and extension activities.
The College of Agriculture (CAU-Imphal), Kyrdemkulai, Meghalaya, initiated the campaign on June 1.
According to a statement here, a programme was organised at Lummynri village in Kyrdemkulai, where an awareness campaign was conducted focusing on the adverse impacts of excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides on soil, the environment and human health.
The campaign highlighted the objectives of Khet Bachao Abhiyan, which include the promotion of natural farming practices, judicious and balanced use of fertilisers, integrated nutrient management (INM), green manuring and improvement of soil health for sustainable agriculture and healthy living.
During the programme, farmers were sensitised on the long-term benefits of adopting eco-friendly and soil-conserving agricultural practices.
Prof. Ram Singh, Dean, encouraged the farmers, particularly rural youths, to benefit from training programmes and gradually adopt modern and precision agriculture practices.
The event was attended by village heads, village representatives and a large number of farmers from Lummynri village, who actively participated in the discussions and awareness activities.
Meanwhile, the campaign was also formally launched on June 1 at Sonamite village under Damalgre Block in South West Garo Hills district during a Focused Group Discussion and Input Distribution Programme organised under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP-WIA) by the College of Community Science, Tura.
The programme was led by Dr. Namita Singh, Dean-in-Charge, College of Community Science, Tura, who highlighted the importance of protecting agricultural fields through improved crop management practices, timely adoption of scientific farming techniques and active community participation. She encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices to improve productivity and strengthen livelihood security.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan, being conducted from June 1 to June 30, 2026, aims to create awareness among farmers on crop protection, pest and disease management and sustainable agricultural technologies through farmer interactions, field demonstrations and extension activities.
The programme was participated by farmers, village leaders, faculty members and students.
