MLCU conducts cleaning drive, waste audit for clean-up initiative
SHILLONG, June 3: The Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems (DETE) at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) organised a cleaning drive and waste audit on Wednesday, joining the regional “Himalayan Clean Up 2026” initiative. The drive covered the university’s Nongrah campus, the surrounding locality, the nearby river, and the Lapalang market area. Students, faculty, and staff participated in the collection, segregation, and responsible disposal of waste. A central component of the exercise was the waste and brand audit. This process identifies local consumption patterns and the prevalence of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. By analysing the collected waste, the initiative aims to provide data-driven insights into the plastic pollution challenges facing the Himalayan region. The Himalayan Clean Up is a mountain-wide movement focused on promoting sustainable waste management and encouraging long-term behavioural change. The department expressed its appreciation to the volunteers for their efforts in highlighting the importance of responsible consumption and community-led environmental conservation.
