SHILLONG, June 4: Renowned Khasi scholar, author, and former Principal of St. Mary’s College, Dr. (Sr.) Philomena Kharakor (RNDM), passed away on Thursday at the age of 82.
The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) announced her demise, mourning the loss of a dedicated educator who spent decades promoting Khasi literature and culture.
Born on September 8, 1947, at Laitlyngkot, Sr. Philomena joined the congregation and took her final religious vows in 1968. She was widely respected for her leadership at St. Mary’s College, Shillong, where she played a significant role in advancing higher education for women in the Northeast.
Beyond her administrative career, Sr. Philomena was a celebrated scholar. Her seminal work, Ka Kolshor Khasi Kumba Paw Ha Ka Litereshor Khasi (Khasi Culture as Reflected in Khasi Literature), remains a vital reference for researchers and students of Khasi heritage. In June 2006, the Khasi Authors Society honored her for her immense contributions to the literary field.
She also served as the President of the Alumni Association of St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education and remained active in academic circles long after her retirement.
Her mortal remains have been placed at St. Mary’s Convent, Laitumkhrah. A Requiem Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Convent Chapel at 6 pm on Thursday and Friday. The funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 am at the same venue, followed by burial at the Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery.
