MAWKYRWAT, June 3: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, Dr DRL Nonglait, on Wednesday stated that his primary objectives if elected would be the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Addressing a campaign rally at Wahkaji village in South West Khasi Hills, Nonglait argued that a collaborative approach between the MP and the state government is essential to achieve these long-standing demands.
“To achieve results, we need an MP who will work with the state government to meet the Prime Minister and Home Minister together. This shows we are united, rather than going separately and claiming individual credit,” Nonglait said.
He cited the example of Assam, where the state government and MPs successfully collaborated to gain recognition for the Bodo language.
Beyond these issues, Nonglait highlighted the need to increase the state’s agricultural budget and improve the education sector.
He added that he has already discussed these priorities with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the two Deputy CMs, who have expressed their support for his vision.
