SHILLONG, June 4: While Meghalaya is working to ensure a hassle-free environment for visitors, the conduct and condition of several roadside dhabas along the Guwahati-Shillong Road are reportedly turning the travel experience into an ordeal for tourists.
Tourists traveling to the state capital complained that many dhabas where taxis stop for refreshments are filthy, overpriced, and managed by rude staff. Since most tourist cabs stop at these 5-6 specific establishments for washroom breaks, visitors are often forced to use their facilities regardless of their condition.
“These dhabas should at least maintain basic hygiene. The toilets are in a terrible state,” one tourist said.
Another traveler reported being charged Rs 100 for a single piece of puri at R Warjri Veg Dhaba. When he questioned the high price, the manager reportedly became rude. Similar concerns regarding cleanliness were raised about several dhabas located in the Nongpoh area.
Visitors have now urged the Food Commissionerate to inspect these establishments and enforce maintenance standards to ensure that travelers do not fall ill during their visit to the state.
