JOWAI, June 4: Following complaints from the public, the KSU has flagged a critical shortage of medicines at the Khliehriat Civil Hospital, forcing patients to purchase essential supplies from private pharmacies at higher prices.
The shortage has hit economically disadvantaged patients hardest, as they rely on the government hospital for affordable healthcare.
A delegation from the KSU East Jaintia Hills District Unit, led by President Streamly S. Suchen, met with the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) and the Medical Superintendent (MS) on June 3 to verify the grievances.
During the meeting, the health officials stated they lack accurate data on medicine availability because the oversight responsibility lies with the Drug Inspector (DI), who is currently managing both West and East Jaintia Hills districts. They further clarified that there is currently no full-time Drug Inspector posted in East Jaintia Hills.
The DMHO and the Medical Superintendent assured the KSU that they would highlight the issue to higher authorities for immediate action.
The KSU has demanded that the state government immediately appoint a full-time Drug Inspector for the district. The organisation also plans to meet with the Health Minister to discuss the crisis further.
