Berlin, June 5: Four-time champions Germany will look to put the disappointments of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups behind them in Group E, where Ecuador, Cote d’Ivoire and debutants Curacao will all be aiming to spring a surprise.
Germany
Germany heads into the tournament under Julian Nagelsmann seeking a return to former glory after back-to-back group-stage exits. Encouraging signs emerged at Euro 2024, while a strong qualifying finish restored confidence.

Coach Sebastian Beccacece has assembled a disciplined side that conceded just five goals in 18 qualifiers.
Star player: Enner Valencia – The veteran striker remains Ecuador’s main attacking threat.Player to watch: Moises Caicedo – The Chelsea midfielder is the heartbeat of Ecuador’s midfield.
Cote d’Ivoire
The African side returns to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and hopes to reach the knockout stage for the first time.
Coach Emerse Fae has built a tactically flexible team capable of both controlling possession and striking on the counterattack.
Star player: Amad Diallo – The Manchester United winger brings pace, creativity and goals.
Player to watch: Yan Diomande – The highly rated RB Leipzig teenager could be one of the tournament’s breakout stars.
Curacao
One of the tournament’s underdog stories, Curacao qualified for its first World Cup after edging Jamaica in CONCACAF qualifying. Guided by veteran coach Dick Advocaat, the Caribbean nation will look to defy the odds in a challenging group.
Star player: Tahith Chong – The former Manchester United midfielder is Curacao’s most recognizable name.Player to watch: Sontje Hansen – The Middlesbrough winger adds pace and attacking quality.
Germany starts as the clear favourite in Group E, but Ecuador and Cote d’Ivoire possess enough quality to challenge for a knockout-stage berth, while Curacao will hope to continue its fairytale journey. (IANS)
