SHILLONG, June 5: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has accepted the resignation of its former vice president Robertjune Kharjahrin even as the party dismissed reports of division within the party over the support extended to MDA nominee James P.K. Sangma for the June 18 Rajya Sabha poll.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the party respects Kharjahrin’s decision and refused to comment on the reasons cited in his resignation letter.
“Everyone has the freedom to think in whatever way they feel. We have received the resignation letter. We respect his decision and have accepted his resignation,” Lyngdoh said.
Kharjahrin, who was the party candidate in Lok Sabha elections in 2024 resigned from the party in protest against the party’s decision to support James.
Responding to suggestions of internal differences within the party, Lyngdoh dismissed such claims, stating that Kharjahrin’s resignation should not be interpreted as evidence of a split in the party. “There is no division. We have received his resignation letter and accepted it. I do not see any differences within the party as being suggested,” he said.
