SHILLONG, June 8: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the torching of four vehicles in different parts of Shillong on Saturday were “isolated incidents” and assured that the government would look into them.
Responding to queries from reporters on Monday, Sangma said he had not yet received a detailed report on the incidents.
“I have not got the full report yet. I will find out what happened and then, maybe later I can explain. But it does not look like any major law and order issue as such. It appears to be isolated incidents, but I will definitely look into them,” he said.
Among the vehicles targeted was a police department Mahindra Thar parked at the Kench’s Trace Beat House. The others included a Health Department Innova parked near Synod College at Lumdiengjri, a NEEPCO-owned Maruti SX4 at Mawlai Phudmuri and a tourist taxi in Nongmensong.
Earlier, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said unidentified miscreants were suspected to be behind the attacks.
According to him, the police vehicle was set ablaze at around 3 am, damaging its hood and seats before the fire was extinguished. Around the same time, the Health Department vehicle was partially burnt.
The NEEPCO vehicle, parked by the roadside at Mawlai Phudmuri, suffered damage to its interior, while the tourist taxi suffered damage to its front portion in the arson attacks.
Police suspect that the incidents were linked, as all four occurred around the same time.
