Mumbai, June 7: Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has lauded teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his fearless approach and extraordinary power-hitting ability, describing the youngster’s mindset as one of his greatest strengths.
Speaking at a Kabuni event at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, Watson was asked to identify qualities from current Indian cricketers that he would have liked to possess during his playing days. The 44-year-old immediately pointed to the 15-year-old Suryavanshi, who has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket.
Watson was particularly impressed by the youngster’s ability to clear the boundary in all directions and his willingness to play without fear of failure.
“Vaibhav’s power is exceptional because he can hit all around the ground, not just straight or towards the leg side but also through the off side. What stands out equally is his fearless mindset. He doesn’t seem worried about getting out, which is something many players struggle with during their careers,” Watson said.
Suryavanshi’s stock has risen considerably in recent weeks after he earned a place in India’s T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games. The selection made him the youngest cricketer ever to be picked for the Indian national team, surpassing a long-standing record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. (PTI)
