SHILLONG, June 9: The KHADC Executive Committee (EC) has decided to increase the salaries of its 72 casual employees, many of whom have served the council for years on low wages.
The council has proposed raising the monthly salary of all casual workers to a flat rate of Rs 10,000 as an initial measure. Currently, these employees receive between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000 per month.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, KHADC CEM Winston Tony Lyngdoh said the move aims to align the council’s wage structure with the Minimum Wages Act and address concerns raised by the Labour Department.
“Despite the council’s financial constraints, the Executive Committee felt it would be unfair to neglect the welfare of these workers,” Lyngdoh said. He noted that while some employees have served for over a decade, others have been with the council for five to eight years.
The CEM added that if the council’s financial position improves, further efforts will be made to ensure pay scales meet government-prescribed minimum wage norms.
To assess the impact of the hike, the EC has directed Executive Member in-charge of Finance, Seiborlang Warbah, to prepare a report on the financial implications. The report is expected next week, after which the EC will take a final decision on implementation.
