MAWKYRWAT/SHILLONG, June 9: Miscreants burnt down the office of the SAI Computer Limited located at Pamdaba in Ranikor, 50 km from Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District.
Official sources informed that the incident took place in the wee hours of Monday night in which some unknown miscreants set ablaze the office of the SAI Computer Limited, but fortunately the fire burnt only the items inside the office and the building was not damaged.
According to the FIR filed by one Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, Project Manager of SAI Computer Limited, the items that were damaged in the fire include computers and other properties valued to be around Rs 3 lakh.
SAI Computer Limited, a company from Uttar Pradesh was engaged in power distribution in Mawsynram area, East Khasi Hills District and Ranikor area, South West Khasi Hills District and recently faced a lot of problems after the pressure groups and village leaders of Mawsynram area protests against the handing over of power distribution to the company.
After receiving the FIR, the police registered a case at Ranikor police station. No one has been arrested yet in connection with the arson case.
CM assures termination of contract
NPP leaders from three blocks claim Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured them that the power distribution contract awarded to SAI Computer Ltd for the Mawsynram Division will be terminated.
The assurance followed representations from party leaders in Mawsynram, Mawphlang, and Ranikor, who reported public outcry over sharp increases in electricity bills since the firm took over distribution for the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).
Former Mawsynram MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang told reporters that the delegation met the Chief Minister on Sunday evening to reiterate their demand. “The Chief Minister has agreed to terminate the contract. We believe an official order directing SAI Computer Ltd to cease operations in the Mawsynram Division will be issued within the next few days,” Shangpliang said.
Mawsynram MDC Alvin K Sawkmie also thanked the Chief Minister for addressing the grievances of residents across the three affected blocks. He appealed to the public for patience while the government finalises the legal process for termination.
The demand for the firm’s removal had intensified recently amid widespread allegations of excessive billing and growing dissatisfaction with its management of electricity distribution in the region.
