SHILLONG, June 12: Meghalaya footballers Sanfida Nongrum and Ribansi Jamu were felicitated by the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) on Thursday for their contribution to India’s successful SAFF Women’s Championship campaign.
India ended a seven-year wait for the title by defeating Bangladesh in the final. Sanfida played a pivotal role in the triumph, scoring in both the semifinal against Bhutan and the final, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Addressing young footballers during the felicitation programme, Sanfida urged them to challenge themselves, remain consistent and never give up in the face of adversity.“Talent alone is not enough. Players must continue learning, improving and seeking opportunities beyond Meghalaya. Perseverance and hard work are essential for success,” she said.Reflecting on India’s title-winning run, Sanfida credited team unity and determination for the success, particularly after the disappointment of the AFC campaign earlier this year. She also thanked supporters for their encouragement during the final.Ribansi described her maiden appearance for the senior Indian women’s team as a dream come true and said winning the championship in her first tournament was a special moment in her career.
