SHILLONG, June 13: The busy and strategically important Guwahati-Shillong Highway, which has long remained under stretches of darkness during the night, is set to witness a major improvement with the installation of street lights along several sections of the road.
Sources informed that work on the installation of street lights has already commenced at various locations along the highway. The initiative is expected to enhance visibility for motorists and improve overall road safety, particularly during nighttime travel.
According to sources, street lighting is being taken up in around seven to ten stretches of the highway. The move reportedly follows requests and requirements raised by villages situated along the route, where residents have highlighted the need for better illumination.
Each identified stretch is expected to cover approximately three to four kilometres, thereby ensuring improved lighting in areas that have traditionally remained poorly lit.
Sources further stated that the street lights are likely to become operational within the next six months.
Once completed, the project is expected to benefit thousands of commuters who travel daily on the Guwahati-Shillong Highway, while also enhancing safety and convenience for residents living along the corridor.
The initiative is being seen as a significant step towards improving infrastructure and road safety on one of the busiest highways connecting Assam and Meghalaya.
