Turkish striker Hakan Şükür etched his name into football history by scoring the fastest goal ever recorded at a FIFA World Cup, finding the net just 10.8 seconds into Turkey’s third-place play-off against South Korea at the 2002 tournament.
The record-breaking moment came after South Korea kicked off the match and immediately lost possession.
Turkish forward İlhan Mansız pressed high, won the ball from defender Hong Myung-bo and quickly set up Şükür, who fired a low shot past goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae.Şükür’s strike eclipsed the previous World Cup record of 16 seconds, set by Václav Mašek against Mexico in 1962. The goal also marked a personal redemption for Turkey’s captain, who had failed to score throughout the tournament before the third-place match. Turkey went on to defeat South Korea 3-2, securing a historic third-place finish and the bronze medal in what remains the country’s best-ever World Cup performance. (Agencies)
