DHAKA, June 16: Bangladesh’s Awami League has strongly condemned what it describes as a continued crackdown on its leaders and activists, calling for the immediate withdrawal of “politically motivated and false” cases. The party demanded the unconditional release of political prisoners and an end to mass arrests, harassment cases and unlawful detentions.
It said public support for its recent programme on withdrawing cases and releasing detainees showed growing backing for its stance, despite what it claimed was repression and lack of security for its members. The Awami League alleged that its political activities have been unlawfully restricted but insisted it remains resilient.
The party accused the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government, led by Tarique Rahman, of failing to ensure public safety and enabling widespread instability. It also criticised the former interim administration under Muhammad Yunus, alleging it contributed to a climate of fear and repression.
Claiming over 600 murders occurred in the government’s first 100 days, the Awami League said citizens face insecurity and legal intimidation for expressing dissent. It warned that state institutions are being used for oppression and urged restoration of civil rights and democratic freedoms. (IANS)
