SHILLONG, June 16: Marking International Domestic Workers’ Day, the All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union (AMDWU) on Tuesday called for stronger legal protection, fair wages and social security for domestic workers across the state.
Addressing media persons here, the union vice-president Elbina Mary Nongkhlaw stated that while domestic workers are vital to households and the economy, they lack formal recognition and access to welfare benefits.
She noted that women, who comprise the majority of this workforce, often face barriers to education and employment, making gender justice essential for a workplace free from discrimination.
The union also proposed a minimum wage of Rs 600 per day for full-time domestic workers. For part-time staff working one hour daily, the union suggested a minimum monthly salary of Rs 3,000.
Nongkhlaw also highlighted the need for a dedicated Welfare Board for domestic workers to ensure they can access institutional support, insurance and state welfare schemes.
She also raised concerns regarding harassment and exploitation, urging victims and the public to report any form of abuse.
It may be mentioned that the union is currently working to organise and empower workers by encouraging them to register with it.
Nongkhlaw added that the organisation provides awareness programmes to help workers—many of whom have had limited schooling—to understand and assert their labour rights.
Reaffirming its commitment to the cause, the union stated that the workforce deserves respect and compensation that reflects their contribution to society.
