SHILLONG, June 18: A total of 188 farmers attended an awareness programme organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), West Khasi Hills, as part of the month-long “Khet Bachao Abhiyaan” (Save the Farm Campaign) 2026, at Mawlaisyiem village on Thursday.
Launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and ICAR, the nationwide initiative runs from June 1 to June 30. Its primary objective is to protect farmland, restore soil health, and promote sustainable agriculture by reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
The programme was attended by District Kisan Morcha president K Wahlang and Mawthadraishan Kisan Morcha president R. Marshillong, who stressed the importance of soil health and sustainable farming practices. Officials from FOCUS, the State Livelihood Mission (SLM), and ATMA, alongside the village Headman, interacted with farmers regarding various developmental initiatives and support services.
Technical sessions included practical demonstrations on soil sample collection, Soil Health Card preparation, and the use of Azolla as a biofertiliser. To encourage the adoption of improved technologies, vegetable seeds, bio-pesticides, and veterinary supplements were distributed to the participants.
