Seattle, June 18: The United States and Australia will both look to continue their winning starts to the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they face off in a key Group D encounter at Seattle Stadium on Saturday.
The co-hosts began their campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, while Australia surprised many observers by defeating Turkey 2-0 in their opening match. The USA arrived at the tournament under scrutiny, with questions surrounding their ability to make a deep run. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side answered some of those doubts with a dominant display against Paraguay. An early own goal by Damian Bobadilla handed the Americans the lead before striker Folarin Balogun stole the spotlight with goals in the 31st and 50th minutes. Paraguay briefly threatened a comeback after pulling one back in the second half, but Giovanni Reyna’s stoppage-time strike sealed a comprehensive victory.
Having carried positive momentum from pre-tournament results into their opening game, the Americans will be aiming to take another significant step towards the knockout rounds with a second consecutive win.Australia, meanwhile, produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round by overcoming fancied Turkey. Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured a memorable victory despite the Socceroos spending much of the match on the back foot.
Turkey dominated possession and created numerous chances, but Australia’s disciplined defence and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Patrick Beach proved decisive. The young shot-stopper made eight saves on his competitive international debut to frustrate the Turkish attack. The result has boosted confidence within Tony Popovic’s squad, knowing another victory could all but secure qualification for the Round of 32.Australia will, however, face a stern test against the tournament co-hosts. The USA have won the last two meetings between the sides, including a 2-1 victory in October 2025. (Agencies)
