EKH to observe ‘Nasha Mukt Saptah’ with street plays and digital campaigns

SHILLONG, June 19: The Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with various stakeholders, will observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026 through a series of awareness activities under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA).
According to a statement here, the initiative includes the observance of ‘Nasha Mukt Saptah’ from June 17 to 26, as prescribed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The campaign, themed ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan—Viksit Bharat Ki Pehchan’, aims to encourage active participation from educational institutions, NGOs, village authorities and the youths.
Activities include an online anti-drug e-pledge and the registration of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Mitra’ volunteers via the official NMBA portal. An online quiz and an Instagram reel competition are also being held, with the deadline for reel submissions set for June 24.
To further sensitise the public, street plays (Nukkad Natak) are scheduled at several locations. On June 24, performances will be held at Don Bosco Square (2 pm), Nongmynsong (3 pm) and Motphran (2 pm).
On June 25, a play will be staged at Laitumkhrah Police Point at 1 pm. Further performances are slated for June 29 at the Mawlai Bus Stand (3 pm), Police Bazar (4 pm), Jhalupara (3 pm) and Jaiaw Mawbynna (3 pm).
The district-level observance will conclude on June 30 with a sports event at the Rangdajied Futsal ground in Pynthorbah.
Anti-drug bike rally, flash mobs
To mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) 2026, the Directorate of Social Welfare, in partnership with the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), will conduct a series of awareness programmes on June 20 and 22.
According to a statement here, the initiatives are designed to sensitise the public to the dangers of substance abuse and promote a drug-free society through direct community engagement.
A bike rally is scheduled for June 20, with the flag-off at 11 am from the U Soso Tham Auditorium. The rally will proceed through Laitkor, Sanmer, Mylliem, Laitlyngkot and Kyrdemkhla, before concluding at Mawkdok.
On June 22, the organisers will hold road stops and flash mob awareness activities from 11 am to 5 pm. This outreach will cover several localities, including Nongmynsong, Polo, Mawlai, Mawprem, Harijan Colony (Mawlonghat), Jhalupara, Police Bazar, Laitumkhrah, Nongthymmai, Madanriting and Sawlad.
