India win two medals on opening day of Asian Relay Championships
Shaoxing (China), June 20: India won a silver and a bronze on the opening day of the Asian Relay Championships here on Saturday. The Indian mixed 4x100m quartet of Animesh Kujur, Gaurav Pranav, Tamanna and SS Sneha clocked 41.47 seconds to take the bronze medal. Thailand won gold with a time of 41.14 seconds, while China took the silver in 41.29 seconds. Later in the day, the Indian mixed 4x400m team of TS Shetty, Barath Sridhar, MR Poovamma and Neeru Pathak won the silver, clocking 3 minutes and 17.06 seconds. Kazakhstan won with a time of 3:16.35, while China took the bronze in 3:17.20. (PTI)
India’s jr men’s artistic gymnastics team wins bronze at Asian C’hips
New Delhi, June 20: India’s junior men’s artistic gymnastics team scripted history by clinching the bronze medal at the Asian Championships, according to information received here. Competing against some of the continent’s strongest sides, the young Indian team of Harschit Damodaran, Nishad Narvane, SK Nabigh Ali, Akshat Bajaj and Mohammed Zaid Ansari delivered a creditable performance to finish third with 224.493 points at Zunyi in China on Friday. China claimed the gold medal with 241.458 points, while Japan took silver with 239.461. (PTI)
Abhay-Velavan storm into final of Asian doubles squash
New Delhi, June 20: India’s Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar stayed on course for their title defence after storming into the final of the third Asian Doubles Squash Championships in Sarawak, Malaysia on Saturday. Abhay and Velavan defeated Malaysian third seeds Sanjay Jeeva and Duncan Lee 11-7, 11-9 in the semifinals. The Indian top seed will meet second-seeded Pakistan pair of Nasir Iqbal and Noor Zaman in the final on Sunday. (PTI)
Ashmita Chaliha’s Macau Open run ends in semifinals
Macau, June 20: India’s campaign at the Macau Open Super 300 badminton tournament came to an end after Ashmita Chaliha suffered a straight-game defeat to South Korea’s Park Ga Eun in the women’s singles semifinals here on Saturday. The world No. 63 Indian went down 17-21, 9-21 to world No. 61 Park in a contest lasting 38 minutes. (PTI)
Four Indians in final of World Boxing Cup 2 in China
Guiyang (China), June 20: Jyoti and Minakshi spearheaded a strong Indian challenge as the country secured four spots in the finals, while two other pugilists settled for bronze medals at the World Boxing Cup 2 here on Saturday. Jyoti (48kg) produced a gritty performance to edge past Mexico’s Fatima Herrera 3-2 and enter the title clash. The win was especially significant as Herrera had claimed a historic silver medal at the World Boxing Cup Brazil 2026 after moving down to the 48kg category. Minakshi (51kg), the world No. 1 in the 48kg division who has stepped up a weight class, was in complete control as she outclassed Spain’s Laura Fuertes Fernandez 5-0 to storm into the final. Prachi (57kg) also registered a commanding 4-1 victory over France’s Amina Zidani to reach the gold medal bout. She had earlier defeated a Paris Olympics bronze medallist in the quarterfinals. In the men’s section, Deepak (70kg) maintained India’s dominance with a clinical 5-0 win over France’s Makan Traore to seal his place in the final. India also bagged two bronze medals, with Jugnoo (85kg) and Nikhil (55kg) ending their campaigns in the semifinals. (PTI)
