Top 12 players selected for State Chess Championship in WGH

Tura, June 21: The two-day Selection-cum-Chess Tournament organised by the West Garo Hills Chess Association (WGHCA) concluded successfully on Saturday, with the top 12 performers securing places in the district team for the upcoming State-Level Chess Championship.
The tournament, which drew around 50 participants from various Garo Hills districts, was held in an open category format without age-group divisions, allowing players of all backgrounds to compete against one another. Organisers noted that participation was slightly affected as several schools in the region are currently conducting half-yearly examinations.
The competition was played under a seven-round Swiss League format, with each player receiving 45 minutes and a 10-second increment per move.
The closely contested event witnessed several exciting matches over the two days. Winners were presented with trophies and cash prizes.The closing ceremony was attended by Fr. Ravi Prabhat Ekka, Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Rongkhon, Tura, as the chief guest.
During the event, officials of the West Garo Hills Chess Association highlighted the growing popularity of chess across the region and reiterated their commitment to promoting the sport among young players.
The association also announced plans to host a North East-level chess tournament in the future to provide greater exposure and competitive opportunities for emerging talents.
The 12 players selected to represent the district at the State-Level Chess Championship, which is expected to be held in Shillong or Jowai on dates yet to be announced, are Barbith M. Sangma, Pringprang Ch. Marak, Arano Rikrim Ch. Momin, Nityananda Hajong, Predinath R. Sangma, Atchiso Ch. Momin, Sachin Kumar, Marcosh N. Marak, Jaksram A. Sangma, Wilseng G. Marak, Lalaobirth M. Sangma and Charming C. Marak.
