GUWAHATI, June 22: Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail after his plea was rejected by Gauhati High Court.
Reports state that Mahanta has moved the apex court after failing to secure relief from the High Court.
The matter has now been listed for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
It may be recalled that the Gauhati High Court had on May 29 rejected the bail application of Mahanta for a second time.
The hearing before the High Court was conducted by Justice Mitali Thakuria, during which detailed submissions were made by both sides.
The counsel, representing Mahanta, had argued in favour of granting bail. However, Advocate General, Assam, Devajit Saikia, opposed the application and urged the court to reject the plea.
After the High Court hearing, special public prosecutor Ziaul Kamar, while responding to mediapersons, informed that the focus of the case would shift to the trial stage, when witnesses would testify and documentary evidence would be taken.
Earlier, a special fast-track court, constituted specifically for the case, had rejected Mahanta’s bail application in connection with the case.
During the ongoing trial stage, the special court has been recording the statements of prosecution witnesses.
Defence counsels have been intensively cross-examining the witnesses while the prosecution plans to rely on 394 expected witnesses, which includes medical experts and banking officials.
