Messi double sends Argentina to knockouts
argentina 2 | 0 austria

Arlington, June 22: Defending champions Argentina secured their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Austria in their Group J clash on Monday.
Lionel Messi starred once again for the Albiceleste, scoring both goals as Argentina maintained their perfect start to the tournament and extended their winning streak at the World Cup to eight matches since their shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the 2022 edition.
Argentina had an early opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute, but Messi’s effort drifted wide of the post. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, however, made amends in the 38th minute, finishing calmly after a clever move involving Thiago Almada and Facundo Medina.
Austria attempted to respond after the break but struggled to break down a disciplined Argentine defence. The South American side continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Messi remaining at the heart of most attacking moves. The victory was sealed deep into stoppage time when Messi found the net again, reacting quickest after his initial effort had been saved and firing home through a crowded penalty area.
Backed by a passionate crowd at the packed AT&T Stadium, Argentina looked every bit the title contenders as they controlled large portions of the contest against an Austrian side that had opened its campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan.
The result sends Argentina through to the knockout rounds with a game to spare, while Austria will now look to secure qualification when they face Algeria in their final group-stage fixture.
Argentina will conclude their Group J campaign against Jordan on Saturday, aiming to maintain their winning momentum ahead of the knockout phase.
With two victories from two matches and a place in the knockout stage already secured, Argentina have once again underlined why they remain among the strongest contenders for the World Cup crown.
The reigning champions have combined defensive solidity with attacking flair, while the continued brilliance of Lionel Messi has provided the inspiration behind their impressive start to the campaign. Beyond the goals and results, Argentina’s performances have reflected the confidence, maturity and winning mentality that carried them to glory in Qatar four years ago. As the tournament progresses and the challenges become increasingly demanding, Lionel Scaloni’s side will take great encouragement from the manner in which they have navigated the group stage so far.
